Royal Cornwall Hospitals' Trust chairman to leave

The chairman of the trust that runs Cornwall's main hospitals is stepping down.

Jim McKenna says NHS challenges, like those facing a trust in special measures, demand more time that the part-time role.

He added that his other responsibilites as an elected councillor would suffer if he did not prioritise.

Mr McKenna said: "The role of Trust Chair is part-time, but the challenges of the NHS – particularly for a Trust like RCHT which is in special measures – has meant that the job has required a much greater time commitment.

"After much consideration I have concluded that my responsibilities, including those which come with my role as an elected Councillor, will suffer if I do not make a clear choice about priorities.

"I am therefore standing down as Trust Chair at the end of this month.

"It has been a great privilege to serve as Chair since January of last year. We have a team of thoroughly dedicated staff in the NHS in Cornwall and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and my colleagues on the Trust board for their tremendous commitment and magnificent efforts.

"I believe the Trust has made real progress in recent months and I have every confidence that it is well placed to continue its improvement in the months and years to come".

Jim McKenna is the Independent Member for Penzance Promenade on Cornwall Council.

He is also Chair of the Penwith Landscape Partnership Board, Vice Chair of the Penzance Regeneration Board and Chair of the Penzance Placeshaping Partnership.  He was formerly Chief Executive of Penwith District Council.

Dr Mairi McLean, Vice-Chair of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust said: “Jim McKenna has been an enthusiastic and dedicated Chair ever since he took up his post at the beginning of 2017.

"Jim has been a public servant for many years and in different capacities. It is typical of him to recognise the potential conflict between the time needed to be an effective elected Councillor and the time required to be Chair of the Trust.

"With the support of our remarkable staff the Trust has now started to make the necessary improvements that will eventually see us emerge from special measures.

"We are making headway and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim for his valuable contribution over this recent period".

Mairi McLean has agreed to take on the role and responsibilities of Acting Chair from 1st June 2018.
