A Cornwall man has become a strawberry - yes, really - to raise money for rescued dogs.

Kerrin Hollywood, Pirate FM's Animal Welfare Champion at the 2018 Local Heroes Awards, wanted to help the pups he looks after at K9 Crusaders, near Truro.

Voters were given the chance to pick from six hairstyles - with the native Scotsman promising to chop off his locks and have it transformed into the winning look.

Kerrin said: "The reason for doing it was following a post from our treasurer showing the extent of our annual vets bill which I wanted to help with.

"The other reason is we have started holding agility training for the our volunteers and dogs in our care.

"Unfortunately we have to borrow the equipment so they cant practise during the week.

"I really wanted to get something more permanent as the dogs are loving it and it's excellent stimulation for them.

"The fundraiser went brilliantly with our supporters really getting into the spirit of it and backing their favouite style."

The result wasn't announced until two minutes before voting closed - with just five votes separating the top three.

The group then headed to Beerwulf in Falmouth for the epic makeover, thanks to local stylist Phil from TheSalon.

From mullets to baldness, the voters decided to turn their favourite volunteer into the British fruit - the brightly-coloured strawberry.

But the challenge didn't stop there.

Kerrin said: "Voting raised £925 - much more than the original £500 target which was great, but being so close to £1,000, I really wanted to achieve that.

"So I came up with a second challenge, if people could raise another £75 in 24 hours I would do my best to sneak into a garden centre and plant myself amongst their strawberries without being caught.

"The mission was accomplished and I had great fun at Carnon Downs Garden Centre.

"We had some fabulous reactions as well, my favourite being a dear chap who held a conversation with me as if I was an actual strawberry and hoping I might be able to advise on my wild cousins in his back garden.

"It certainly has been an intersting week as a strawberry with most people having a good laugh at it.

"It does look a bit weird if you are out at a DIY centre picking up hose ends or filling your car up with petrol though."

Kerrin says he's also been mistaken for other items of fruit - and even a bug.

He said: "I have been mistaken for a ladybird on more than one occassion and also a kiwi - which is just madness if you ask me.

"I've only got until Thursday until I can get a new style (I have to keep it for a week) and will likely go for something less conspicuous - possibly a pineapple.

"All in all have now raised £1150, which will be split 50/50 between ongoing vetinary costs and agility equipment, with a team of local craftsmen giving up there time for free to make it.

"I am delighted with the result."
