Firefighters have spent the night battling a huge blaze that tore through several properties in Truro.

Crews from the city called in back-up from Falmouth and St Just just after midnight on Wednesday.

It broke out on Merrifield Close in what is believed to be a sheltered housing unit.

Pirate FM understands three properties were affected as flames spread to the roof space.

Abigail Johnson lives nearby and got in touch with Pirate FM, describing the blaze as massive.

She had to closed her windows after smelling acrid smoke and burning electrics in her home.

Police and paramedics also rushed to the scene but Pirate FM understands everyone made it out OK.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 00:05 this morning the Critical Control Centre received multiple emergency calls regarding a residential fire.

"Two appliances from Truro were immediately mobilised. Once in attendance, Truro requested 'Make Pumps 4'.

"Two additional appliances were mobilised, along side the command vehicle from St Just and the OSV from Falmouth.

"The fire had spread to the roof. Crews are using 2 main jets, 4 breathing apparatus and are searching the building".

A spokesperson later added: "At 00:44 'Make Pumps 6' was requested, along with the attendance of the Aerial Ladder Platform.

"The fire had began to spread through the roof. Firefighters are using 6 breathing apparatus and making good progress.

"Crews on scene are liaising with Police and Ambulance, who are also in attendance".

By 2am firefighters wearing breathing equipment were using seven jets and the aerial ladder platform to douse the flames, which had spread across the roof space and was stopped by crews using building construction.

Just after 3am, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Stop message received for the incident. All persons are accounted for.

"We are now scaling back the operations to two pumps and two main jets and crews are damping down".

A joint fire investigation will be taking place on Wednesday morning.
