WATCH: Police investigate a major fire in Truro

Police are investigating a huge fire which tore through sheltered housing in Truro.

Residents had to be evacuated as flames and smoke gutted properties on Merrifield Close.

Several lost their homes in the overnight blaze, which scrambled firefighters from across Cornwall.

Devon and Cornwall Police posted a scene guard as investigators combed for clues, but that has since been lifted.

Officers have confirmed a 40-year-old man has been arrested and is waiting to be questioned on suspicion of arson with intent.

On Wednesday, a force spokesperson said: "Police were alerted to a fire at a property on Merrifield Close in Trehavern, Truro, at 12.20am on Wednesday 13th June.

"The fire had occurred across several joint properties. No casualties were reported.

"An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the fire": Read the latest update.

Dave Pilling from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews were confronted with a fully developed fire involving a number of properties on the site.

"Around eight properties have been affected, either by fire, smoke or water damage".

Dave added: "There's been some severe damage. A number of residents have been displaced due to the fire.

"We're currently carrying out a fire investigation with police to try and ascertain the cause".

Devon and Cornwall Police added: "We are currently appealing for witnesses to the incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact us via 101 quoting crime reference CR/051662/18".
