People are being asked for their thoughts after a mystery object washed up on a beach in Falmouth.

Coastguard teams got the shout to Gyllyngvase after the discovery on Tuesday lunchtime.

It was feared the object could be an explosive and an examination was carried out by the bomb squad.

Experts confirmed that it was not dangerous but they still don't know what it is.

A Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson posted on Facebook: "Team tasked to a report on an 'unknown object' washed up on Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth.

"On scene, team members liaised with RNLI Lifeguards (who reported it) to establish what the object was.

"Pictures where taken and sent to EODU (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit) for examination and confirmation that the object was not explosive.

"EODU confirmed that is was safe and we where stood down. RTB, ready for service by 1pm."

They added: "If you spot anything 'unknown' or suspicious on our coast line, then please dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

"We'll attend and will liaise directly with explosive experts or relevant local authorities or organise the correct or most appropriate disposal.

"Any thoughts as to what this might be/have been?"

It has sparked a string of comments online.

Some people think it might be an old crab/lobster pot and other suggestions include a large sea urchin.

Any ideas?
