A teenager plunges 80ft down a blow hole on the north Cornwall coast and survives.

The 16-year-old was airlifted to hospital after being winched to safety near Padstow.

Crews say he is lucky to be alive after the multi-agency rescue between Trevone and Harlyn.

Coastguards, the helicopter, police, paramedics and a lifeboat were scrambled in the early hours of Saturday.

Posting on Facebook, Padstow Coastguard said: "Team requested by Falmouth Coastguard to a 16 year old male who had fallen 60-70 feet into the round hole at Trevone.

"As crews arrived on scene, along with the Cornwall Air Ambulance critical care car crew, further details came in that the Round Hole was in fact the wrong location. We then received information that the casualty was actually between Trevone and Harlyn.

"Whilst making the short journey to the other side of the bay Newquay Coastguard was also tasked to provide back up for a cliff rescue.

"A South Western Ambulance Service senior paramedic had also arrived at this location at the same time.

"Once on scene, the casualty was located 70-80 foot below in another blow hole on the coastal path and full cliff rescue equipment was set up.

"Padstow Lifeboat was called at this point due to there being a cave out to the seaward side with a possible extrication route.

"Our cliff man was then lowered to the casualty whilst taking an air ambulance paramedic down in an assisted descent.

"Once with the casualty medical care and stabilisation was carried out. At this point Newquay Coastguard arrived along with Devon & Cornwall Police and a second cliff technician was rigged up and lowered over the cliff to assist.

"Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 924 was called to provide a transfer (not available earlier due to returning from another incident ). It was decided to recover the casualty up the cliff rather than to the lifeboat as, due to conditions and tide, it deemed the safest and best option.

"A few minutes after the casualty was recovered up the cliff. Rescue 924 arrived on scene to transfer the casualty to RCH Treliske.

"The first cliff technician and the air ambulance paramedic were then recovered back up the cliff. Excellent multi-agency team work, as always, with a great result.

"Team then stood down and back on station at 0430hrs".

Newquay Coastguard posted: "Out on a shout backing up Padstow Coastguard along with Padstow lifeboat station South Western Ambulance Service and Cornwall Air Ambulance medics to a teen who had fallen 80ft down a cliff at Trevone.

"A complex cliff rescue, Padstow team lowered a rope rescue technician with a critical care paramedic to casualty, closely followed by a Coastguard technician who is also a critical care Paramedic.

"The casualty was stablilised then brought up on a rescue stretcher. The male was extremely lucky and believed not life-threatening injuries.

"He was then transported to hospital by Coastguard Rescue 924 helicopter".
