Assault against a family in Plymouth treated as hate crime

A family has been attacked by a group of teenagers in Plymouth, in a suspected hate crime.

Police say they were targeted by a group of around 20 youngsters on the Hoe.

The family was verbally abused before the father and his son were shoved and punched.

Officers have described what happened on Friday evening as a "racially aggravated incident".

Devon and Cornwall Police is urging anyone who something at around 10pm on Friday to come forward.

"Police in Plymouth are currently investigating an alleged racially aggravated incident which happened on the Hoe in Plymouth on Friday 22 June.

"The incident occurred between 10pm and 10.15pm. A family were enjoying an evening on the Hoe Promonade when a group of approximately 20 teenagers approached the family and began to verbally abuse them.

"The group, which consisted of boys and girls aged around 14-years-old, physically assaulted the family by pushing and punching the father and the son. One of the teenagers threw a drink over the mother.

"The group also stole one of the family's sunhats and tried to take the son's phone.

"The father and son both received physical injuries as a result of the incident and police are urgently seeking information from anyone who was present or witnesses what happened".
