Cornwall Council has firmly pinned its colours to the mast by hoisting the English flag at County Hall in support of the England football team at the World Cup.

With Harry Kane set to lead out the team against Colombia in the first knockout round in Moscow tonight there was clear support shown at the council’s headquarters in Truro.

The council usually has three flags flying in Treyew Road – the Cornish flag, union flag and the European Union flag.

Today County Hall could be seen as perhaps embracing Brexit early by replacing that flag with the English St George Cross.

It is believed to be the first time that the council has flown the English flag, but it is not the first time the council has flown an alternative having previously hoisted the rainbow flag in support of Pride and LGBT.

Rumours that the council would also be piping through the sound of Kirsty MacColl’s England 2 Colombia 0 throughout County Hall during the day today proved to be unfounded when we visited this morning.

How long the flag remains flying outside County Hall may depend on England’s participation in the tournament. Could it remain in place all the way to the final on July 15?
