Appeal to help cat shot in the mouth near Redruth

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 3:15pm 26th July 2018.

A cat has been left clinging to life after being shot in the mouth near Redruth.

Dexter needed emergency surgery and his family think someone forced a gun into his mouth.

He suffered a broken jaw, a hole in his palette and, horrifyingly, a severed tongue.

Despite his injuries, Dexter managed to drag himself home to Illogan but remains very poorly.

Owner Ruth Lewis was heartbroken to find Dexter bleeding and struggling to breathe.

"I thought he was going to die in my arms. Someone deliberately put a gun in our cat's mouth and shot him. I have no idea how he managed to drag himself home but I'm thankful he's hanging in there; it's a mess.

"I want to raise awareness about this because I just couldn't bear the thought of someone else going through what we're going through or what he is going through at the moment.

"All our animals are usually shut in at night but he went missing Monday which is really uncharacteristic of him.

"We didn't immediately panic. We live in the middle of nowhere and cats are known to wander off to do their own thing.

"I just have no idea why anybody would willingly hurt a living creature. He's just the sweetest little soul and it's beyond sick; finding him like that was horrid".

Ruth added that she wants to raise awareness for other cat owners in and around the area.

"I don't want to go accusing anyone and go around saying someone is deliberately shooting cats but there is no way someone could have accidentally put a gun in his mouth and shot him..there is just no other explanation.

"I just want to raise awareness and tell other owners in the area. I'm not expecting anyone to come forward and say they know who did it and I don't want any sympathy votes, I just want to do what's right for cat owners. People need to be alert".

"We just hope he wins this fight and thank goodness he managed to drag himself home and not into a hedge somewhere to die a horrible, painful death".

Dexter the cat was shot near Redruth and now his family has set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover the cost of his vets bills

Dexter's family have set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover the cost of his vets bills and donate whatever is left to charity.

"The excellent veterinary team that are now caring for Dexter have pulled out shrapnel from his head and are currently operating on him trying to save his life.

"Dexter has already proved he’s a fighter by getting himself home and now we want to be able to give him the best chance at recovery by providing him with the necessary treatment, raising awareness of this act of cruelty and hopefully getting him justice.

"Your money will go directly towards Dexter’s medical bill and if we’re lucky enough to have any extra funds, the remaining money will be donated to the NAWT (National Animal Welfare Trust) to help them continue to rescue animals; this is where we adopted Dexter from".
