A main road through Helston closes after a car caught on fire.

Crews were called to the scene on the A394 at Sithney Common Hill on Thursday afternoon.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours.

Smoke was seen billowing from the vehicle as firefighters battled to put the blaze out.

Traffic was queuing in the area.

"Appliances from Helston and Penzance Community Fire Stations were mobilised to a car fire in the area.

"On arrival the crews used one hose reel jet and two breathing apparatus.

"Police, Cornwall Highways and Environment Agency also attended this incident."

An inrix traffic and travel spokesperson said: "Reports of heavy traffic due to vehicle fire on A394 near B3302 Penzance Road.

"Near the turn for Sithney."

They later added: "Police confirm the road has been closed in both directions again to allow recovery and clean-up work to take place"
