WATCH: SECOND gorse fire burns on Cornish carn

Published by Emma Carton at 6:22am 6th August 2018. (Updated at 7:15pm 6th August 2018)

Locals are being urged to keep doors and windows shut because of a SECOND gorse fire in west Cornwall.

Crews said they would remain at The Carn at Pendeen into Monday morning, after a string of 999 calls.

It follows a huge blaze that engulfed two acres on Saturday, believed to have been started on purpose.

"Following numerous 999 calls, two fire appliances from St Just, two fire appliances from Penzance and the water carrier from Helston are in attendance at a fire involving about 1km square of deep-rooted gorse that is on fire.

"Firefighters have knocked the fire down using beaters and have set up a water relay to feed two hosereel jets to dampen around the edges to prevent further spread towards Trewellard village.

"The fire will be smoldering overnight. Residents nearby may wish to consider closing their windows.

"Update at 0130 hours: One crew from St. Ives are now in attendance and will be monitoring the incident until relieved at approximately 0700 hours".

Councillor Sue James posted an update on her blog, saying it was predicted to smouler and burn for days.

"On Saturday 4th August, just after 12:30pm, I saw a fire burning across the carn above Pendeen Church. I checked with locals and it had been called in to the fire service and very soon after the first crews were arriving.

"Our St Just fire fighters needed the help of teams from Penzance and St Ives to get it under control but this morning (Sunday) it smoulders on.

"I rang Critical Control to ensure they knew it was still smouldering and that in fact, a patch still had flames. They had already had several calls from concerned locals and told me it was likely to take several days to burn itself out. A crew had checked it this morning but, at this stage, they did not assess they needed to re-establish crews up there.

"The smell of fire is never pleasant and now home, I can smell it on me.

"I have unconfirmed reports that the police have made an arrest for suspected arson but they are appealing for witnesses who might have been walking up there after midday.

"So, if you know of holiday makers or locals that were up there, ask them to call Devon & Cornwall Police or email 101@dc.police.uk, quoting incident log 481 of 4/8/18".
