The RNLI in Looe have been scrambled to four rescues in three hours, including a swimmer being swept down river.

Crews leapt into action after the man got caught in a strong tidal current as he tried to make it across to the other side.

It was the fourth shout on Sunday and came just 15 minutes after a struggling kayaker had to be plucked to safety at Banjo Pier.

The others included a boat, suffering fuel problems and drifting off Plaidy beach, towed to the safety of mooring above Looe bridge.

Volunteers were also scrambled after a string of 999 calls to police, reporting jet-skiers among swimmers at Millendreath.

The man who had tried to swim across the river was thrown a lifebelt by a passing fishing boat.

Lifeboat operations manager Dave Haines and ferryman Dave Butters had spotted the incident unfolding from the ferry.

They immediately headed down river on Dave Haines's boat, the Emma Louise, where they rescued the person from the river.

RNLI helmsman, Brian Bowdler, said the swimmer was given "strong words of advice" before being taken back to the landing pontoon.

"These incidents could have quickly escalated into something more serious was it not for prompt action from the 999 callers.

"Jet skis and swimmers do not mix and care should always be taken when operating jet skis close to swimmers.

"People underestimate the strength of the tidal current and swimming in the river is prohibited by bye laws, due to the dangers of commercial and pleasure boats operating in the area having restricted views and not being able to see them".
