The sister of a teenager who died from meningitis after falling ill at Boardmasters speaks out.

George Zographou was rushed to hospital after contracting the infection just before last year's event in Newquay.

The 18-year-old was rushed to Treliske in August 2017 but tragically doctors couldn't save him.

Now Nicole is backing a government report which aims to improve earlier diagnosis and raise awareness

"It's been the worst time of our lives, it's the unimaginable that happened,

"It's still something that is devastating us every day.

"George was 18, he was about to receive his A Level results, he was my only sibling and we were extremely close.

"Then I received the worst phone call of my life."

She is also urging festival-goers this year to know the signs.

"You die very quickly from it and it's an awful way to watch somebody die, then you are left with all of the 'what ifs' afterwards.

"What if I'd known more, what if I'd acted differently?

"Because it's preventable and because people can be saved from it, the after effects of somebody dying from it in that way, it haunts you."

George Zographou, who was from Bristol, attended a college which saw two confirmed cases last spring.

People who knew the youngster have been given antibiotics as a precaution, even though officials say the risk to others is very small.

Signs and symptoms of meningococcal bacteria are as follows:

Meningitis:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Dislike of bright light
  • Joint/muscle pain

Septicaemia:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Bruising rash
  • Rapid breathing
  • Cold hands and feet

Not all these signs and symptoms may show at once, but someone with this illness can become very ill.

The illness may progress over one or two days but it can develop very rapidly, sometimes in a matter of hours.
