Baby boy born on rescue helicopter over Cornwall

A baby has been born on board a helicopter over Cornwall, after a woman went into labour on a visit to Scilly.

The mum-to-be, dad and bump were evacuated by Coastguard chopper, because there was no midwife on the islands.

Rescue 924 was scrambled to St Mary's at 7pm on Saturday, stopping only to pick up a midwife on route.

However it seems the tot was in such a rush to arrive he was welcomed into the world at 1400ft over Penzance.

With the help of the midwife and crew, the little boy was born at 8.53pm as the helicopter made its way to Treliske.

"This is the second time that a baby has been born on board a Coastguard helicopter. The last one was born over Lunna Holm, Shetland in December 2012.

"We are absolutely thrilled and delighted to have played a part in the birth and are pleased that mum and baby are doing well.

"It's rare to hear that our helicopter launched with seven people on board, but were preparing to land with eight.

"Congratulations Mum and Dad!"

Jonathan Mustard, Aeronautical Operations Controller for HM Coastguard

We will second those congratulations! Mum and baby are said to be doing well.
