WATCH: The full story of mid-flight birth over Cornwall

A paramedic who helped deliver a baby mid-flight over Cornwall has revealed that was a first in his 25 years in search and rescue!

The Coastguard helicopter was scrambled after mum Alicia went into labour during a holiday on the Isles of Scilly.

Crews stopped to pick a midwife before heading to St Mary's to take the family to Treliske.

However it seems little Torran MacDonald did not want to wait and he was born 1400ft over Penzance!

Andy Batchelor was one of the paramedics who helped support the midwife on board Rescue 924.

"It is very rare. It's certainly my first one in nearly 25 years involved in search and rescue.

"We regularly undertake medical evacuations of ladies in labour from the Scilly isles and other areas, typically ships as well.

"However, this is definitely the first one we have had in my time!"

"Typically my role would be to winch down on the wire and rescue and deliver paramedic-led care but clearly in this case it was a supporting role for the midwife.

"I've not done it before, not airborne certainly!

"I wouldn't say it was anything routine. It was quite interesting and exciting I guess".

Ed Griffith, Coastguard Paramedic
