Old toilet block in Newlyn goes up for auction

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 4:38pm 21st August 2018.

Former public toilets near Penzance are going to auction... and set to scoop over £15,000.

Experts say the old loos in Newlyn could be turned into a home or offices.

The site on Fore Street is among 155 lots being sold by regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson.

Katie Semmens, Clive Emson's senior auction valuer for the West Country, said: "We never get tired of saying this - there is no chain to worry about, particularly if you're flush with cash!

"This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase the facility, Cornwall Council having instructed Clive Emson to sell the asset in auction because it is surplus to requirements.

"We anticipate keen interest, especially as the property is just a few paces from Newlyn's fishing harbour, where, weather permitting, there are great views over Newlyn and Mounts Bay.

"Subject to planning consents, there is scope for residential or commercial development, incorporating perhaps upwards extension or total replacement.

"The harbour is partially visible from the property, which is another draw."

Starting at 11am, the sixth of Clive Emson Auctioneers' eight regional West Country auctions this year takes place at St Mellion International Resort, St Mellion, Cornwall, on Thursday September 13th.

July's West Country auction recorded a sale rate of 94%; the auctioneering firm catalogued 171 lots at five venues across southern England, with nearly £20 million raised.

Graham Barton, Clive Emson's West Country auctioneer, said: "As far as the extra quarter point on interest rates go, from 0.5% to 0.75%, we are not sensing any major tribulations in the South West property market because we seem to be a part of the world where demand remains strong due to the continuing appeal of our region.

"Couple this with savings/deposit returns likely to remain somewhere between pathetic and paltry for many years and what better place to could there be to put your money than property and land in the West Country?"
