Cornwall's biggest celebration of Pride is underway in Newquay this weekend.

The town's train station is decked out with multicoloured signs and bunting for Cornwall Pride's biggest event of the year.

People across the duchy are being urged to 'join the celebration and be themselves' on Saturday 25th August.

Organisers are encouraging everyone to come out for Cornwall Pride celebrations.

It's the second time Pride's being held in Newquay and organisers Matthew and Nathaniel reckon this year will 'be bigger, better and even more exciting '.

"We've had incredible support from the community and obviously as Pride develops and diversity and equality increases yes, it strengthens but there are still challenges which is why Pride needs to exist in the way that it does.

"It's not just for the LGBT community it's for everyone to enjoy for allies, for everyone, really it's a celebration to be you and the allowance to be you without having any hate, any challenges and it's just for everybody to enjoy themselves."

Chairperson, Matthew Barcia Gomes

A carnival of rainbow flags, floats, walking bands and dance groups will kickstart the celebrations with a lunchtime parade through the town centre.

Cornwall Pride 2018 is kickstarting with a lunchtime parade through Newquay.

The parade will finish at the Killacourt where the show really begins with 'Rainbow Fest' 1-7.30pm.

Rainbow Fest boasts live performances, interactive activities, face painting, food stalls and is free to attend.

The event is hosted by TV star Vicki Vivacious - a drag queen with roots in Redruth.

Acts performing on the main stage include Newquay muscians Joe Hurworth and Daisy Clark and there will even be a Greatest Showman stage show teaser.

Other acts to follow are:

  • Unity Dance and Mind
  • Benjii Matthews
  • Tarquin as David Bowie
  • Sammy Shepheard
  • Little Twisted
  • Lucy Walters
Pride celebrations are taking place on the Killacourt from 1pm and the party continues at Tall Trees nightclub 8pm-2am.

Extra buses will be in service this weekend to help people get to Pride.

Officials are expecting more than 5,000 people to descend on Newquay for the celebrations.

Matthew added;

"We've got even more people involved this year with some really brilliant acts.

"Just carry some glitter, bring a smile and enjoy.

"Its going to be an incredible day it was already an insane and brilliant day last year and today is going to be just as good if not definitely better."

The 'Moonbow' after party will carry on the celebrations at Tall Trees Nightclub.
