Neighbours lead tributes after fatal house fire

Neighbours who rushed to help when a house fire broke out in Hayle have described it as a terrible tragedy.

An elderly woman died when flames tore through the terraced home at Phillack.

Locals reported seeing smoke billowing from the windows late on Friday night.

It scrambled firefighters from the town, Tolvaddon, St Ives, Perranporth, Falmouth, St Just and St Dennis.

Former St Ives' MP Andrew George lives nearby and rushed out to help when he heard sirens.

He was among the first on the scene and has been praised by crews for helping to find the hydrant.

"We were shocked to hear the sirens and came out to see what was going on.

"We saw all the smoke and gosh, the flames - it was certainly well alight by the time we saw it.

"The whole thing is terribly, terribly tragic. She was a lovely lady. It has shocked us all here.

"It's one of those neighbourhoods where you get to know everyone and you're on speaking terms with everyone.

"Everyone is civil to one another here. She had been here for a very long time and was very much part of the neighbourhood".

Police and the fire service launched a joint investigation on Saturday but the blaze is not being treated as suspicious.

Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service launched a joint investigation on Saturday.

At the time, they said the circumstances surrounding the blaze were not being treated as suspicious.

"The initial crews reported back to us there was intense heat. It was fully developed, which really makes it arduous conditions for our crews.

"I don't have enough praise for them. They really did everything they could last night - and more.

"It's absolutely shocking and it's not what you expect on your doorstep".
