Is your heart ageing faster than you are?

We are being urged to take an online test that tells you if your heart is ageing faster than you are.

The tool can work out if you are more at risk of a heart attack or stroke.

It asks health and lifestyle questions about stuff like smoking, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.

In the south-west, more than three quarters of people who took the test have an older heart age.

What do the figures show?

Public Health England says in the south-west, 10,076 people die from a heart attack or stroke every year.

It warns around 1 in 4 deaths are among under 75s, which could be prevented if people take action to improve their heart health

Almost two million Heart Age Tests have been completed across England and in the south-west, 77% of people have a heart age higher than their actual age.

How does the test work?

The Heart Age Test asks a number of simple physical and lifestyle questions and provides an immediate estimation of someone's heart age, as well as a prediction of the risk of having a heart attack or stroke by a certain age.

It also gives suggestions on lifestyle changes to help people reduce their heart age such as losing weight, quitting smoking, exercising regularly and cutting back on alcohol.

David Green from Plymouth has done it, only to be told he had the heart of someone 10 years older.

"The whole thing around the heart age - that's a correlation between your actual blood pressure and also your level of cholesterol.

"From those two readings and a few other facts, they told me that my heart was in fact that of a 69-year-old man rather than a 59-year-old man.

"For the first time in my life, I really started to do a sort of exercise programme.

"I like swimming so I joined our local sports centre on a membership. I do lots of classes. I found aqua-fit and aqua-zumba type classes really suited me".
