WATCH: Newquay's 'wheelbarrow man' turns 90

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 7:45am 30th September 2018. (Updated at 7:47am 30th September 2018)

The man famous for cleaning Newquay's streets with a wheelbarrow in tow has turned 90 and the community threw him a party.

Gilbert is renowned for spending his time voluntarily litter picking, some describe him as a legend and others would say he's as iconic as Newquay's surf culture.

In 2016 Gilbert won Clean Cornwall’s 'For the Good of Cornwall' community award after the community put him forward for the accolade.

For more than 50 years Gilbert has pushed his wheelbarrow round the town trimming bushes, weeding and clearing the streets of debris.

The town came together to give him a memorable milestone celebration.

Locals helped pay for the event and Gilbert was presented with a gift to mark the occasion.

Newquay musicians performed and a number of people turned up to show their appreciation for all the work Gilbert has put in over the years.

The birthday festivities took place at Trenance cottages where Gilbert used to live.

The festivities were held at Trenance cottages. Some of the cottages date back to the 1800s and Gilbert actually lived in one of them as a child.

Businesses, The Paulos Circus and Clarissa Nails salon donated enough to hire the venue and the tea room at the cottages baked him a cake.

Local tea room, The Garden, baked him a cake.

One of the organisers, Jon Goodman told Pirate FM he still spots Gilbert tidying up the town and was very grateful to everyone who came together to support the event:

"Gilbert was overjoyed. I managed to find someone who could make few apple pasties which he had insisted on having when I initially spoke with him about it and also loved his Cornish Cream tea.

"He asked for a trip around Crantock and Holywell after the event and a couple of people volunteered and he duly went on his travels.

"Gilbert certainly deserves his accolades so it was a pleasure to organise for both me and Dawn and it was a great afternoon".
