Suspected arson at St Austell house

Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on a derelict house in St Austell.

Smoke was spotted coming from the upstairs window of a detached building on Holmbush Road at around 5.30pm on Thursday.

Two fire crews rushed to the scene and found the fire had spread from the first floor to the roof space.

They had to use breathing apparatus and a high pressure hosereel jet to put the blaze out.

When they suspected it had been started deliberately they called in Devon and Cornwall Police. 

"Both appliances and an Officer were mobilised to this incident, on arrival smoke was found to be issuing from a first floor two storey semi detached property, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a high pressure hosereel jet to extinguish the fire. Devon & Cornwall Police were requested as arson was suspected. 

"Arson does not only threaten lives and damage property it has a detrimental effect on communities and the lives of people within them."

"Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a derelict building in Holmbush Avenue, St Austell.

"The fire began in an upstairs bedroom between 5pm and 5.25pm on Thursday 6 September.

"No-one was inside the premises at the time of the fire. The premises has been uninhabited for some time and is boarded up.

"The incident is being treated as arson and is being investigated by police."

Devon and Cornwall Police

It comes as a major investigation has been launched after a 'suspicious' fire tore through flats in Plymouth.

Five residents had to be rescued from the burning block at St Budeaux.

No-one was seriously hurt but detectives believe the blaze on Wednesday morning was arson.

After dealing with the latest incident in At Austell, crews put out a message of thanks.

"Multiple calls received to a derelict building in Holmbush, St Austell this evening with smoke issuing from the property.

"Two appliances from St Austell were mobilised. Crews wearing breathing apparatus gained entry and extinguished the fire, which had spread from the first floor into the roof space. Classification: Arson suspected.

"Also... Thank you very much to the wonderful family that stopped and dropped us some pasty's whilst we were packing up! Really put a smile on our faces...proper 'ansome!"
