Crews suspect arson after fire near Cornish supermarket

Firefighters scrambled to a blaze near a supermarket on the outskirts of Falmouth think it was arson.

The Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service control room received multiple calls about burning trees outside Lidl.

They were called to Penryn just before 9.30pm on Monday and when they arrived, found a hedge well alight.

"Cornwall Fire and Rescue service received multiple calls from a members of the public reporting trees on fire outside of Lidl, Penryn.

"One pump from Falmouth Community Fire Station was immediately mobilised by Critical Control.

"On arrival, the officer in charge confirmed a hedge on fire measuring approximately 5m by 5m.

"Crews extinguished the fire using one hose reel jet and one main jet.

"The scene was left safe and arson was suspected for this incident".

Cornwall FRS warns that arson does not only threaten lives and damage property, but has a detrimental effect on communities and the lives of people within them.

Anyone with information on fires being deliberately started are advised to anonymously call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111 or contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101 with information.
