Land's End or Lands End? That is the question...

Cornwall Council makes a lot of decisions – some big and some very, very small.

One of the latter was made this morning when the council took a vote on an apostrophe...

The council’s agenda included a report on the new electoral boundaries which will create the divisions for the new slimmed down council when it comes into force in 2021.

That is when elections will be held for the new 87-member council, cut down from the current 123 councillors.

As part of the changes the council has not only had to shift the boundaries but has also had to come up with names for the areas which the new councillors will represent.

This morning’s full council meeting saw a debate which lasted more than an hour-and-a-half on what these names should be.

And one point of contention was whether Land’s End should have an apostrophe.

Councillor Sue James, who represents St Just In Penwith, said she was not an expert on the matter but she had consulted one in the form of Craig Weatherhill, an historian who has published books on west Cornwall.

She explained that he had agreed that Land’s End should have an apostrophe and so she was asking for the new divisions for the area to have one.

Mebyon Kernow councillor Loveday Jenkin gave her support to the move and said Mr Weatherhill was the best person to make such a call.

The amendment was unanimously supported by the council. One of the few decisions which did receive 100% support.
