Pop-up brothel uncovered in Newquay

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 11:03am 12th September 2018. (Updated at 11:53am 12th September 2018)

A pop-up brothel has been uncovered at flats in Newquay town centre.

Police discovered it in a block on Mount Wise after reports of suspicious activity from locals.

Officers say the premises was a holiday apartment which had been booked online and the owner was not aware.

Two women from eastern Europe were found there working as sex workers.

Police in the town say they are dealing with the case with a 'victim-centered approach'.

"On 11th September a pop-up brothel was located by police in a block of flats on Mount Wise, Newquay, following a report of suspicious activity by a local person.

"The premises was a holiday apartment which the sex workers had booked online.

"The owner of the apartment was not aware the premises was being used as a brothel.

"Two Eastern European female sex workers were located in the premises.

"After comprehensive checks by the police the two sex workers vacated the premises.

"The police have a victim centred approach to dealing with sex workers.

"Although it is an offence to operate a brothel, we are mindful that sex workers often operate under duress and may be victims of modern slavery."

Inspector Dave Meredith, Newquay Police
