Police name woman who died after A38 crash

Police have named the woman who died after a serious crash on the A38, just across the Cornwall border.

Briony Elliott lost her life when a lorry and a car collided at near the busy Leigham junction at Plymouth.

The 54-year-old from the Stoke area of the city was given first aid at the scene but could not be saved.

The road was shut for over eight hours last Tuesday evening and police have launched an appeal for clues.

"Police were notified at around 6.30pm of the incident which happened on the eastbound carriageway and involved a heavy goods vehicle and an Audi A4.

"It was reported that the female driver of the Audi was struck in the collision. Briony Elliott was located by officers at the scene and given first aid but she was later confirmed deceased.

"Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by a Family Liaison Officer.

"A 33-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released under investigation, pending further enquiries. 

"Emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed for over eight hours.

"Officers would like to thank the public for their patience whist the investigation was carried out at the scene".
