Police are asking for Cornish businesses to be on high alert as counterfeit money keeps turning up.

The force has issued a warning about fake Scottish £50 notes, used in shops in and around Wadebridge.

It is believed two white men with Irish accents are using the fake notes to purchase something low-priced.

All the notes seem to have the same serial number.

Anyone with further information should contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by phone on 101.

Banks in Scotland issue their own bank notes and Royal Bank of Scotland's advice for figuring out a fake is not to rely on just one method of checking.

Police advice on how to check notes at the checkout

Check all notes you are given as change, in the presence of the retailer, before you leave the checkout and request they exchange any that you believe to be counterfeit.

Manual checks can quickly and easily be made using the security features on bank notes.

Don’t rely on checking just one security feature, but check all of the below:

  • The feel of the paper and the print
  • The watermark
  • The holograms
  • The metallic thread
  • The motion thread on the £50 note
