Cornwall's RNLI crews have issued an appeal, amid suspicions the door handle on a historic lifeboat station was stolen.

The ornate decoration has hung on the old building at Penlee Point in Mousehole for decades.

This is the lifeboat station that was home to the crew of the lifeboat, the Solomon Browne.

It sank going to the aid of stricken vessel Union Star back in 1981, claiming the lives of all on board.

On Sunday, Penlee Lifeboat posted on social media to say the door handle had disappeared and they want it back.

"This beautiful cast iron handle has been part of the old lifeboat station at Penlee Point, Mousehole since it was built in 1912.

"Countless Penlee Lifeboat coxswains and crew members have turned it over the years - but now it's gone missing, presumed stolen!

"We would love to see the handle returned to Penlee - it's part of our lifeboat history and we want it back!

"Please spread the word and share. Let's make it #toohottohandle!"
