More Barclays banks to close across Cornwall

More Barclays banks to close across Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 3:35pm 1st October 2018.

It has been announced that two more Barclays banks in Cornwall are set to close.

The Bodmin and Padstow branches will both shut for good in January 2019.

Bosses say the decision has been made because of the changes in the way people now do their banking.

Earlier this year it was revealed that the Fowey branch will close this month - and the Saltash and Looe branches will close in December.

"The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.

"At Barclays Padstow branch, the number of transactions have gone down in the previous 24 months and more than three quarters [77 per cent] of our branch customers are also using other ways to do their banking such as online or by telephone.

"In the past 12 months more than half [58 per cent] of branch customers are already using alternative branches and we've identified that we have only 31 regular customers who solely use the counter.

"At Barclays Bodmin branch, the number of transactions have gone down in the previous 24 months and eight in ten [80 per cent] of our branch customers also use other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone.

"In the past 12 months, 44 per cent of branch customers have been using neighbouring branches and we've identified 105 regular customers who solely use the counter.

"We hope that the availability of our other Barclays branches across Cornwall including Wadebridge, Newquay and St Austell, access to services at the Post Office, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers."

Michael Watts, Community Banking Director for Barclays Devon and Cornwall

Barclays says that customers are able undertake every day banking at any Post Office including those at Padstow and Bodmin which are in close proximity to the branches.

The nearest branches for customers are now St Austell, Wadebridge, Newquay and Liskeard.

"We do not take the decision to close any branch lightly and we are committed to adhering to the UK Access to Banking Standard.

"All of our customers will receive a letter, our decision to close document and posters will be displayed in branch and colleagues will be on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have.

"We will be proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally.

"At  Barclays Padstow branch we will be undertaking structural work to leave behind two external cash machines and we have been in discussions with the local council who are aware of our plans.

"We urge any customer who is concerned about how to undertake their banking once the branch closes to contact us so that we can discuss alternative banking options

"We will be hosting ‘tea and teach’ sessions for customers wishing to explore digital banking."
