LIVE: Storm Callum bears down on Cornwall

Storm Callum sweeps into Cornwall with gale force winds and heavy rain.

A yellow severe weather warning for gusts of between 50 and 70mph is in force until midnight.

The Met Office has also issued an alert for the wet stuff in the east and north of the Duchy, for Friday and Saturday.

Flood warnings for Mount's Bay and Land's End to the Lizard have been stood down but alerts remain in force.

However, forecasters warn the gusts could drive huge waves to spill over the tops of harbour walls and seafronts.

At one point on Friday morning, more than 1,000 homes were without power, including over 800 in Par.

All Cross Country trains out of Cornwall have been cancelled, along with some flights Newquay airport.

The Met Office says there is a chance the remnants of Hurricane Michael could come close to Cornwall...

But at the moment there is no official forecast that it will hit the Duchy.

Fallen power cable closes A38 near Ivybridge

The road is likely to be shut for five hours.

"Police were called at 4.10pm today [12 October] to reports that the cable was down on the carriageway just past the Wrangaton junction.

"Police warn that the road is due to be closed both ways for at least the next four to five hours while engineers carry out repair work. The fire service and Highways are also on scene.

"Diversions are in place northbound at Ivybridge Westover with drivers returning to the carriageway at Wrangaton. Motorists travelling southbound will be diverted off at Wrangaton and via the A379 and A374, re-joining at Marsh Mills.

"Police are advising motorists to avoid the area if possible for the next few hours."

Flood alert for the Upper River Tamar...

Flooding is possible for: Bude, Helebridge, Bridgerule, Canworthy Water and Yeolmbridge.

"River levels in Cornwall have risen quickly following heavy rainfall this morning, Friday 12th October.  Although the rain has become lighter this afternoon, further heavy rain may cross the area overnight tonight and throughout Saturday 13th October. 

"Some localised riverside flooding is possible in and care should be taken when in and around these locations.

"We are closely monitoring river levels and will advise you as the situation changes.  We have operatives in the field to relay information, clear blockages and operate defences as and when required."

One appliance from Wadebridge responded to this incident. On arrival a high voltage cable was found lying across the road. Firefighters are assisting Western Power to make the scene safe.

Flooding is possible for: Gribbin Head to Rame Head including, Fowey, Golant, Lostwithiel, Lerryn, Polruan, Polperro, Looe and the Looe Rivers and Seaton.

That is along with: Rame Head to Plymouth including Kingsand, Cawsand, Cremyll, Torpoint, Saltash, tidal rivers Tamar and Plym excluding Plymouth Barbican.

Flooding is possible for: Lizard Point to Gribbin Head including the tidal rivers Helford and Fal, Penryn, Flushing, St Mawes, Portscatho, Portloe, Portholland, Mevagissey and Par.

"Flooding is possible over high tide this evening, Friday 12th October and tomorrow morning.
High water at Newlyn is 7:36pm today and 7:55am tomorrow.

"Time of high water will vary along the coast. All times are in local time.

"High tides, large waves and strong winds may cause wave overtopping of sea defences and flooding to quays with emphasis on Gweek, Flushing, Tresillian and Mylor. Expect tides to be around 0.34m higher than predicted, due to weather conditions. Forecast wind over the high tides is SSW force 8 with upto 7m offshore waves.

"Peak tide levels are falling, but stormy conditions are expected until Saturday afternoon.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and update as required."

Flooding is possible for: Lands End to Lizard Point including Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance, Longrock, Marazion, and Praa Sands.

"Flooding is possible over high tide this evening, Friday 12th October and tomorrow morning.

"High water at Newlyn is 7:36pm today and 7:55am tomorrow. Time of high water will vary along the coast. All times are in local time.

Storm Callum is sparking big problems on the roads this morning, as gales down trees and power cables.

One lane s is closed due to strong winds on the A38 Tamar Bridge, from the Manadon roundabout to Saltash.

"One lane closed and queueing traffic due to strong winds on A38 Tamar Bridge both ways from A386 Manadon Hill (Manadon Roundabout, Crownhill) to B3271 (Saltash)".

Storm Callum Road Safety Warning:

Police have issued a warning to drivers, after logging 16 road-related incidents in the space of half an hour in Cornwall.

Storm Callum has downed trees and power cables across the Duchy, but officers say the A39 is one of the worst affected areas.

Problems have been reported from Falmouth to Camelford, including a downed power cable at Quintrell Downs.

"Severe disruption to arrivals and departures at Newquay Airport because of Storm Callum.

"Passengers should check the status of their flight before travelling because a lot of morning flights have been cancelled".

Traffic and Travel latest...

There have been problems on the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferries on Friday morning.

Lane restrictions are in place on the bridge due to the high winds, with possible delays expected.

At one point on Friday morning, the Torpoint crossings were reduced to a one-ferry service.

However, officials say it is now back up to two and they are working to clear the backlog.

Hundreds of homes across Cornwall are without power, from Penzance to Camelford.

Par is among the worst-hit areas, where Western Power are currently working to restore supplies to more than 800 properties.

The latest from the Met Office...

A yellow severe weather warning is in force for gale force winds of at least 50mph, until midnight.

We are being warned to expect:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves

"Gusts of 50mph are likely with potential for gusts of 60mph around exposed coasts and hills. High tides are also near their peak, heightening the risk of coastal impacts due to large waves.

"Strong winds are expected to arrive across Northern Ireland, south-west England and west Wales during Thursday night, spreading to Scotland by Friday morning. Through the day winds are likely to ease across parts of Northern Ireland and south-west Scotland.

"Elsewhere after a brief lull, winds are expected to strengthen again during the afternoon".
