'Ridiculous' parking charges will not be put forward

Cornwall is being promised that no new 'ridiculous' parking charge hikes will be introduced.

The Council is considering several different options for its car parks across the Duchy.

But officials say no decision will be made until after a public consultation takes place.

Under the figures released last week, the numbers showed that prices for some car parks could jump by around 400%.

But the Council says that would only be under a 'zoning' approach and definitely won't be happening next year.

It comes as the authority carries out a comprehensive review of parking charges across all of its 133 pay and display car parks.

It is with the aim of having a more simplified charging structure.

The plans were discussed at the Economic Growth and Development Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday.

Cornwall Council says no decisions will be made about car park rises until after a public consultation

"We wanted to know that if we went to zoning and banding for charges, from what is currently 123 different charges across Cornwall's car parks, to seven bands what it would look like on a spreadsheet.

"We have absolutely no intention of introducing those charges next year.

"There a different options such as pay on foot, zoning, linear charging bands, reviewing our car parks assets and improving the enforcement around parking both in the car parks and on the street, so that we can actually provide a much better service for the public.

"We are not intending to introduce these, is some cases, ridiculous charges that would see as much as 300% or 400% percent increases."
