A rescue centre near St Austell is fighting for a cat after it was found in a greenhouse with his tail hanging off.

Clay County Cat Care christened him, Cayden, after shutting down talks of having him put down.

Leanne Kent, owner of the centre told Pirate FM that putting him down wouldn't be fair.

She said: "Cats come into our rescue to be rescued, so that's what we do.

"We know it's a slim chance and they may be other complications but it's not fair to just give up on him."

"He needs someone to fight for him and that's what we're doing."

Cat found in greenhouse with his tail hanging off but putting him down wasn't an option for his heartbroken rescuers.

Vets believe Cayden's injuries were caused after a car ran over his tail and degloved it.

They think the car accident happened over a week before he was found.

Vets think his tail was degloved in a road traffic accident, the force of the degloving pulled it from its place.

Cayden is still on painkillers but Vets think he is in less pain now they have removed his tail.

At the moment Cayden is struggling to poo and Vets are concerned this is a sign that he also has serious damage to his spine.

"We've got a bit of a battle ahead of us because they're very much life-threatening injuries.

"He may need skin grafts, Vets are concerned he may have nerve damage.

"It's going to be a long-term process and numerous operations."

"But we will be right by his side to the very end and until we can bring him back to the stage where he can find a nice, loving home."

Vets have since removed his tail completely in an attempt to reduce his pain and give him a chance of survival.

Leanne told Pirate FM that he just wants to be loved.

"In his first consultation, I was holding on to him and he put both his front feet around my wrist and he had tears come out his eyes both myself and the vet were absolutely heartbroken neither of us had seen such an injury like he'd sustained.

"It's heart breaking to see him, he must have been in pain for so long"

"To see a cat have tears come out his eyes, it's not nice."

Leanne said the operations and blood tests Cayden needs in order to recover is likely to go into the thousands.

"We're asking people if they wouldn't mind donating to his care to give this boy a chance to have a new pain free life and a forever home."

"He just wants to be loved, it's heart breaking. We will do absolutely everything in our power to give him that second chance at life."

Clay County Cat Care are appealing for help towards Cayden's ongoing care.

Cayden has been a stray for almost three years but is popular in the community.

Residents who used to put cat food out for him were 'sick with worry' when he went missing.

Vets believe his recovery will take at least half a year.
