"The A30 will remain closed throughout the day eastbound between the A377 and the A382, Exeter, due to an earlier vehicle fire that has caused extensive damage to the carriageway".

Highways England has confirmed the eastbound stretch at Fingle Glen will remain closed for the whole of Tuesday

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service says the fire was so intense, the HGV's tyres were exploding:

"Two fire appliances from our Exeter stations, Middlemoor and Danes Castle, together with a water carrier from Plympton, Plymouth, were initially mobilised following multiple calls (including one from the driver) reporting a fire involving a HGV and its load.

"The attendance was then increased by a further fire appliance from Danes Castle, upon arrival of the first crew, who confirmed the large articulated HGV was well alight and that the tyres were exploding from the heat.

"Due to the size and intensity of the vehicle and fire, both carriageways of the A30 were closed, not just for the safety of the crews but for fellow motorists.

"Police were requested and attended to carry out traffic duties.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue

On Tuesday morning they added: "At this time, the fire is out and all fire appliances have come away from the scene.

"However, the incident remains open until specialist recovery has removed the HGV and confirmation is received that our services are not required during the removal process.

"This section of the A30 Eastbound remains closed until midnight tonight (6th November) to allow for the recovery and resurfacing of the carriageway".

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service

"A30 eastbound closed. Queueing traffic due to emergency repairs and earlier lorry fire from the Pathfinder Village turn off (Fingle Glen) to the A377 (Alphington Junction).

"Congestion to Tedburn road as traffic diverts around the closure. Expect delays.

"The road was closed at 23:30 last night following a large lorry fire. The westbound side reopened during the night but due to the amount of damage to the road, the eastbound side is expected to remain closed throughout much of today".
