New flood alerts have been issued as torrential downpours sweep Cornwall.

They are in force for the south coast, from Land's End to Gribbin Head, ahead of Wednesday evening's high tide.

However, alerts for rivers from Land's to Perranporth and the Upper Tamar have now been stood down.

Drivers are also being warned to take extra care, after reports of surface water flooding from Helston to Bodmin.

A stretch of Cornwall's main rail link to London is closed on Wednesday, amid fears of huge waves at Dawlish.

The yellow severe weather warning for heavy rain will remain in force until 12pm on Wednesday.

A second severe weather warning, for gales and more rain, will be in force from 9am until 9pm on Friday.

Where is at risk of flooding?

Flooding is possible from Land's End to Lizard Point and Lizard Point to Gribbin Head, including Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance, Longrock, Marazion, Praa Sands and the tidal rivers Helford and Fal, Penryn, Flushing, St Mawes, Portscatho, Portloe, Portholland, Mevagissey and Par.

"Be prepared: Flooding is possible over the afternoon high tide on the evening of Wednesday 7th November. High water at Newlyn is at 16:15pm, and times of high water will vary along the coast.

"Strong force 6 westerly winds and offshore wave heights of over 4 m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations in Mount's Bay.

"Expect tides to be around 100mm higher than predicted due to weather conditions.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.

"Keep up to date with weather and tide conditions on local radio. We will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as required.

"Further Flood Alerts will be required for Thursday evening's and Friday's high tides".
