Eyewitnesses have told Pirate FM the situation with a man on a roof in St Austell was "scary".

Police and specialist negotiators were called to the scene at the Park House flats.

The area around the only tower block in Cornwall was cordoned off, early on Monday afternoon.

A man in his 30s was reportedly throwing things like tiles and glass from the roof.

At one point, people were stopped from going inside but the incident was resolved safely at around 6.30pm.

At times the man was even spotted sitting on the roof edge with his legs dangling over the edge.

Firefighters and paramedics were also called and around six to eight officers with shields went into the building.

Police said they were concerned for the man's welfare and were working to resolve the situation safely.

"There is a man on the roof of the flats, he is cursing a swearing and seems to be irate.

"He is throwing tiles and whatever he can find off the roof and down below.

"They have cordoned off the area so no one can walk or drive round the roads.

" I went out for lunch to the Co-op here and got told by the police I wasn't allowed to go down the road.

"And he has been up there ever since."

"In those flats live I don't know how many elderly people, they don't want to be seeing that.

"There are children around coming home from school, why does it have to be at home time, why?

"Kids play in that park, he shouldn't be throwing stuff into the park, there's a doctors' surgery just below too."

Gabby, eyewitness

"It is scary, different things happen at the flats all the time and we just don't want it.

"If he comes down, good luck to him."

"Police are currently at Park House flats in St Austell following concerns for the welfare of a man in his 30s who is on the roof of the tower block.

"A cordon is in place and negotiators are attempting to contact the man in question.

"The man is in a distressed state, and we ask that the public and media respect the cordon and allow police the space to work with the individual, and to bring about a safe resolution".

They later added: "A man has been detained pending a mental health assessment".
