Pirate FM spoke to eyewitnesses at the scene, with some describing the situation as scary.

Simon popped to the shops for lunch and came back to find the whole area cordoned off.

"It must be about two/two and a half hours ago when I went out to lunch, to the Co-op here and got told by police not to go down the road because there was a guy on the roof".

He added: "He is throwing tiles and whatever he can find off the roof and down below.

"They have cordoned off the area so no one can walk or drive round the roads".

Firefighters and paramedics were also scrambled to Bridge Street at around 1pm on Monday.

At one point, people were stopped from going inside as officers worked to resolve the situation.

Councillor Sandra Heyward told Pirate FM she managed to secure them shelter in a nearby pub.

"I've just come home from Truro to see this and there are people out here who've been out here for about four hours, not able to get into their flats because of the risk of falling objects off the roof.

"I arranged with the landlady of the Western, for anyone who lives in the flats who can't get back in, can go down there for coffee and stay warm and dry until such time as they can get back in their homes".
