Figures have revealed that a rising number of struggling families are relying on foodbanks in Cornwall.

The Trussell Trust has four bases in the Duchy, at Helston, Truro and Falmouth, St Austell and Wadebridge.

It has handed out almost almost 60,000 meals across the south-west in six months, many for children.

The charity is blaming issues like Universal Credit and the soaring cost of rent.

What do the figures show?

Trussell Trust foodbanks across the south-west handed out 57,489 meals between April and September.

Of those, 36,359 were for adults and 21,130 for children; that is more than a third of the total.

The figures show a rise on the same time in 2017 of 13.6%

Jacqui runs Camelford and Bodmin and tells Pirate FM some of the stories they hear are heartbreaking:

"It's a difficult thing to walk through a foodbank door and admit that you need help.

"A lot of people leave it to the very, very last minute and it's their last hope which is a great shame because we could've tried to help out so much sooner.

"A fisherman came through and he said I've worked since I was 12, I've always worked, I've always paid my bills and now we can't get to see you because the weather's so bad and I don't know where else to go. I've borrowed money off of everybody and I have nowhere else to go".
