More than 150 hens facing the slaughter are looking for new homes in Cornwall.

An urgent appeal has gone out from The British Hens Welfare Trust.

The ex-commercial birds are just 18 months old and campaigners say they have so much life left to give.

It is hoped that people will able to offer the birds loving retirement homes.

They have been working hard laying eggs for supermarkets to sell, or to put in processed foods like cakes and quiches.

The animal welfare charity is holding hen collections in Liskeard  and Redruth this Sunday 18th November.

Officials say they make great pets and even enjoy a cuddle; Scroll down to find out how to adopt hens.

"Please get in touch if you've got a bit of space in your back garden and think you can give some hens a  second chance at freedom.

"They're really simple creatures to look after, and they give so much back, they are just really grateful to be able to live like chickens should live and do all the things they naturally should do.

"People are quite surprised to learn that chickens love sunbathing, it's quite a funny thing to see, they quite literally stretch their wings out when the sun comes out, and they love feeling the warmth on their features, just like humans do."

Anyone interested in giving a few down-on-their-cluck hens a second chance is urged to register on the website and then call 01884 860084.

Please note that hens need to be reserved in advance of the re-homing day and, whilst the feel good factor of saving these hens from slaughter comes free of charge, the charity asks for a donation to help cover its costs.

"Our coordinators now have a list of people who have registered over the weekend and we are making contact where we can.

"There has been a big response so if people are not successful this time, they should still register and phone us on Monday on the above number to go on the next list, which should not be too long as Cornwall re-homes regularly".
