Crews from across west Cornwall have spent the night battling a massive gorse fire on the Lizard.

Pirate FM understands strong winds were fanning the flames at Ruan Minor on Sunday evening.

Firefighters from Mullion called in back-up from St Keveren and Helston just after 8pm.

At one point, locals say they were helping officials to block off the roads.

Abbie added: "Stopping traffic due to a fire is not how I expected the night to go".

Just before 10pm, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service reported that good progress was being made.

"At 20:11 this evening the Critical Control Centre mobilised one appliance from Mullion to reports of a gorse fire.

"Once in attendance, firefighters requested a further two fire appliances. St Keverne and Helston were mobilised immediately.

"Firefighters are currently dealing with approx. 2 X 100m fronts of high gorse on fire. Beaters and two hose reels are in use, to extinguish the fire".
