Parents have described Cornwall's new birthing centre as the perfect place to bring a baby into the world.

It is a year since the new maternity suite at Treliske welcomed its first families.

Pirate FM helped launch the Birth and Baby Appeal, to give all babies born in the Duchy the best start in life.

Since then, your generosity has helped raised thousands of pounds for state-of-the-art equipment like birthing pools.

Parents have praised Cornwall's newest birthing centre as the perfect place to bring a baby into the world - one year on

Meet Anna, Jase and little Kian who, on the 9th November, became the 800th baby delievered at the centre.

He was welcomed into the world via a water birth, which mum Anna described as a very relaxed experience.

"It's naturally very emotional and a hard time for the mothers to go through but if you could write down what your dream birth would be, they pretty much nailed it".

Cornwall's generosity has helped raise thousands of pounds for the BABA Appeal, to kit out the new maternity and neonatal suites

The big development programme for maternity and neonatal received a £3.6 million investment from the Royal Cornwall Hospitals' NHS Trust.

It includes the new suite, where the rooms are kitted out with state-of-the-art facilities like birthing pools.

Neonatal unit has moving to a much bigger area with more space in the special care nurseries too.

"For the women, they've now got a nice home-from-home environment to have their babies.

"State-of-the-art facilities, lovely en-suites, active birth equipment; it's all here in a unit run by midwives who believe passionately in normal birth and supporting women through that".

Cornwall's new birthing centre has a special area where mums and their new babies can go to chill out after giving birth

"It has everything that you would expect as a midwife but also when people come in, it's just so beautiful and homely.

"I feel that people can come in with all their stuff and just set it out how they want it; they can just be here together having their baby".

"It's been so gratefully received and we're very lucky to have the people we've had here; we've had over 800 births so far.

"Everybody seems to really enjoy the rooms. We've got really spacious rooms and loads of facilities. We can facilitate more than one birth partner at a time too.

"Generally, our feedback has been incredible - everyone loves it. We've had lots of thank you cards that we've put up on our wall.

"I think it's testament to how good the whole service has been from the whole hospital, as well as maternity".

"We are very excited about the opening of an alongside midwifery led unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital as it will give so many women the chance to labour and give birth in a more homely and relaxed environment, which we know gives the very best chance of a positive and low intervention birth".

Pirate FM got to spend time with the team at the Cornwall Birthing Centre, just before it opened in November 2017.

Midwife Shan Hughes gave us a demonstration of how some of the state-of-the-art equipment, special cube beds, work...

The Birth and Baby Appeal is still ongoing as always hoping for more donations to fund the upgrade.
