Work is underway on a £20 million project to do up Hall for Cornwall and Pirate FM has been given a sneak peek inside.

The new theatre will have over 300 more seats when it reopens in around two years time.

Contractors have been handed the keys to the Hall for Cornwall as work starts on a major refurbishment

Officials reckon the massive refurbishment will pull in bigger and better shows from London's West End.

Contactors are already working to rip-out the old interior and have started to bring the new theatre to life.

It is hoped the new theatre, that will have over 300 more seats, will pull in bigger and better shows from the West End

"This has taken about five years of planning and work to come up with a theatre design that I think is going to give Cornwall a theatre that is dimensionally better than the one we had before.

"It's only possible because the theatre that was built 20 years ago has worked well and we've seen a huge growth in audiences. About 85% of the Cornish population touch Hall for Cornwall one way or another, or we touch them.

"It's sad in once sense but it's really exciting from another because we'll end up with a facility that will have 300 more seats in it, it'll have much better sound, much better air-conditioning and we'll be able to get much better programming.

"The reality is that for some of the same shows from London who want to go on tour, we were not big enough to attract them.

"So I think people will find that they'll be able to see things here that they would've had to go to London to see, or dare I say Plymouth".

The building work is expected to last around two years, with the new Hall for Cornwall scheduled to open in 2020

Pirate FM asked Chief Operating Office at Hall for Cornwall, Julie Seyler, if she could give us a hint of some of the shows we can expect.

"The auditorium - I think will be spectacular. We're imagining it's going to be just the most fantastic experience.

"I have seen some hint of some things which are very exciting but obviously we've got to keep those under wraps until we've got them in the bag. It's definitely going to be an opening season to remember".

What is the timeline?

The massive rebuild will expand the auditorium from 900 to 1354 seats and the building work is expected to last around two years in total.

HFC closed for the last time in June and construction work is now beginning, ahead of the new building being unveiled 2020.

During construction, HFC will host a series of open days to welcome the community to view the build's progression.
