A Cornish community has told Pirate FM its Christmas lights have been attacked by vandals and locals are devastated.

Volunteers in Carnon Downs near Truro worked round the clock to get the display ready for last Saturday's switch-on.

Just days later, they discovered the lights on the welcome sign appeared to have been torn down.

They also found other lights pulled off one of the Christmas trees and dumped by its side.

This is what the display looked like before...

"After a fantastic community switch-on event on Saturday night, we are sad to report damage to some of our newly purchased and erected "Carnon Downs" lights on the evening of Tuesday 4th December, some time between 5pm and 10pm.

"Knowing how these were constructed and the amount of work gone in to create these personalised signs, we have no doubt that this was a deliberate attempt at vandalism as over 20 cable ties were cut.

"This is a real shame for this lovely village in only our second year of erecting Christmas Lights.

"The incident has now been reported to the police and if anyone saw anything, please do get in touch. The crime number is CR/112274/18".

"The Community Association Elves have now removed this and will be repairing it this week ready to re-erect as soon as possible but bear with us while we do, it takes time!

"We also noticed while removing the sign that the lights on a mini Christmas tree, decorated by the local Spar were also removed and left in a heap alongside.

"The Carnon Downs Community Association have been fundraising all year and have been fortunate enough to have been given lots of generous donations from many locals to build on last year's display. This set of lights is something we have been very excited about unveiling this year.

"To say we are devastated is an understatement and we just hope someone may have seen something on Tuesday night that can be passed into the police".
