Cornwall is braced for gales of up to 70mph as the Met Office issues another severe weather warning.

The yellow alert for strong winds will be in force from 4pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday.

Forecasters say there is the risk of flooding, with the gusts expected to whip up huge waves.

What can we expect?

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

"Westerly winds will become strong and gusty later on Saturday and overnight, with gusts of around 70mph along exposed coasts.

"Some gusts of 55-65mph are also possible further inland, mainly in association with heavy and squally showers".

Met Office

Flood alerts are in force along the north coast for the high tides, from Land's End to Hartland Point.

"Flooding is possible over the afternoon high tide on the evening tide of Saturday 8th December and the morning tide of Sunday 9th December. Times of high water will vary along the coast.

"Gale Force 8 West North Westerly winds and offshore wave heights of up to 7m are forecast to cause wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations.

"Quay edges and low lying car parks and roads are likely to flood.

"Tides are forecast to be 100 to 200mm higher than predicted.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.

"Keep up to date with weather and tide conditions on local radio. We will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as required".
