A major fire that scrambled crews from across west Cornwall has gutted a house in Camborne.

Crews from Tolvaddon arrived to find smoke billowing from the terraced home on Centenary Street, closing the road for several hours.

They called in back-up from Penzance, Truro, Falmouth and St Just as flames tore through the ground floor.

Firefighters had reports of people still inside when the blaze broke out just after 6pm, but say everyone made it out.

"The fire involves a mid terrace property of two floors with the ground floor well alight.

"Teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are committed at this time with high pressure hosereel jets and main jets for firefighting".

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed everyone was accounted for and crews were damping down and checking for hotspots.

Just after 9.30pm, they said that all crews had left the scene and the incident had been handed over to police.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire but an investigation is expected to take place.
