May faces leadership challenge and wins

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 8:15am 12th December 2018. (Updated at 9:36pm 12th December 2018)

Theresa May has faced a leadership challenge after enough Tory MPs submitted letters to trigger a confidence vote.

The ballot was held between 6pm and 8pm, just days after the Brexit deal vote was delayed.

Despite a divide, the  Prime Minister secured the backing of enough MPs to remain as party leader.

  • Theresa May wins confidence vote but MPs remain divided - latest.

What does Theresa May say?

She gave a speech outside Parliament first thing on Wednesday, saying she will contest the vote with "everything I've got".

What do Cornwall's MPs think?

South East Cornwall's Sheryll Murray was one of the first to submit a letter of no confidence last month.

On Wednesday morning, the BBC reported that she was planning to vote against the Prime Minister.

Pirate FM spoke to MP for St Austell and Newquay, Steve Double, shortly after the announcement was made:

"I'm going to listen very carefully to all that takes place today ahead of the vote but as it stands I fell we've reached a point where we need a change of leadership".

Truro and Falmouth's Sarah Newton tweeted to say she would support Theresa May:

"I am backing the PM. Changing leaders doesn’t change the fact that Parliament needs to deliver what the majority said we would do - the best possible Brexit. Not a no deal Brexit. Not exiting Brexit".

North Cornwall's Scott Mann, St Ives' Derek Thomas and Camborne and Redruth's George Eustice were all unavailable to speak.

How does the ballot work and why was it triggered?

Under British law, a vote of no confidence is triggered when 48 MPs or more submit letters of no confidence.

The process, overseen by the Backbench 1922 Committee, is a secret ballot.

Theresa May needs at least 158 MPs to stand by her in order to remain as party leader.

Sir Graham Brady chairs the committee and told Sky News he was determined to have a fair process...

Chair of the Labour party, Ian Lavery MP, has released the following statement:

"With only weeks left before Britain leaves the EU, Theresa May's weakness and failure has completely immobilised the government at this critical time for the country.

"The Prime Minister's half-baked Brexit deal does not have the backing of her Cabinet, her party, Parliament or the country.

"The Conservative party's internal divisions are putting people's jobs and living standards at risk".
