WATCH: New Year's Eve drink-drive warning for Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 4:22pm 31st December 2018. (Updated at 4:25pm 31st December 2018)

A New Year's Eve drink and drug drive warning is going out to Cornwall.

Police are patrolling across the Duchy and Devon in a bid to keep our roads safer.

Stings have been running over the festive period, including the unmarked lorry cab patrolling our roads.

Operation Tramline gives officers an "unprecedented platform" to spot bad driving offences.

On top of that, Operation Logjam will target drivers across our region in a series of 'morning after' patrols.

It comes as figures show around 1700 people are caught over the limit in our region every year.

"It can have grave consequences. The simple fact is it ruins lives.

"We do unfortunately get some really serious collisions that involve drink drivers. These are the ones that affect the individual, that affect loved ones, family and other people on the roads and it can have a lifetime impact.

"If you think there's any way, shape or form that you might still have alcohol in your body, don't take the risk. Get a taxi or a lift or try to plan things better.

"It could have grave consequences for you, for other people or other loved ones and possibly your job if you need your driving licence for your job".

Inspector Pete Thomas

Over the Christmas and New Year period last year more than 1,000 breath tests were carried out.

150 of those were found to be positive, refused or the driver failed to provide one.

This represents 14% of the total and is an increase of 2% on 2016's result.

The total number of positive breath tests following a collision was higher in number but lower in percentage in 2017 at 52 or 9.6% of the total (542) compared to 10.5% (46 out of 438) in 2016.
