A Cornish foodbank has handed out eight thousand meals in one town in one week.

That is normally a month's supply for Camborne, Pool and Redruth.

The centre saw record-breaking demand in the run up to Christmas.

Volunteers say many are families whose children would normally get free school meals in term time.

Manager Don Gardner is expecting a busy January as the post-festive credit card bills arrive.

The Camborne, Pool and Redruth centre says the total handed out in the week before Christmas is the same as its usual monthly supply

"We open on Wednesday and I'm sure we're preparing for a big influx of people who are really struggling.

"We provided 227 Christmas hampers that were handed out on the 23rd December; that's the biggest we've ever done.

"October, Novemeber and December have broken every record that we've had.

"The credit card bills will come in and we always see a rise in people in foodbanks when they've got bills to pay.

"There's no point in criticising and saying you shouldn't have spent it. We all know people push the budgets and we're there to support them".

The CPR centre is expecting a busy January as the pos-Christmas bills arrive and is appealing for more donations

The centre is appealing for more donations, after clearing out supermarket drop-off points twice just after Christmas.

"It's great to have the support to be honest. We couldn't do it without the community putting stuff in the foodbank.

"I have emptied Tesco in Camborne and Redruth twice since Christmas - the stuff that people have put in".
