A poorly dolphin found stranded in Penzance harbour has died.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue say the creature was too sick to attempt a rescue.

They were called out on Friday afternoon and a post mortem will be carried out on Monday.

"Given the number of common dolphins round our coast at the moment, sadly it's almost inevitable that some come ashore.

"This very poorly adult female stranded in Penzance Harbour today.

"British Divers Marine Life Rescue were soon there and decided the dolphin was too sick and malnourished to survive a rescue attempt.

"She died on the slipway before she could be euthanised and has been taken to Tremough for post mortem.

"She did have a very damaged but fully healed dorsal fin".
