Gritters out as ice warning kicks in for Cornwall

The gritters have gone back out across Cornwall, as an ice warning kicks in.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for the slippery stuff across the drive to work.

Forecasters say wintry showers of sleet and hail over the moors could make conditions dicey too.

Cornwall Council said its teams would be salting the main routes from midnight.

What can we expect?

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Ice on some roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some roads and railways affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

The Met Office yellow warning for ice will remain in force until lunchtime on Tuesday.

What does the south-west forecast say?

"An icy start. Blustery showers will bring rain, sleet or snow at times.

"The snow will mainly be over the hills, although there may be some in low lying areas early in the morning and later in the evening.

"Maximum temperature 7 °C.

"Tonight further wintry showers tonight will bring more snow to the hills and perhaps to low lying areas.

"Some clear spells likely too. A widespread frost will form, with icy patches.

"Minimum temperature -1 °C."
