A warning is going out to drivers as that weather warning for snow and ice kicks in for Cornwall.

While the chances of seeing the white stuff are small, the cold snap is expected to cause icy conditions.

The gritters were out across the Duchy on Monday night and are expected to go back out on Tuesday.

Cornwall Council tweeted a warning to motorists, urging them to stick to the gritted roads.

"Ice, frost and even (light) snow is expected in parts of Cornwall later on.

"Stay safe, and stick to the gritted roads where you can".

What is the advice for driving in snow and ice?

The RAC has these tips for driving in icy weather:

  1. In icy conditions, don’t drive unless absolutely necessary.
  2. If you can’t avoid driving when it’s icy out, the first thing you need to do is clear your windscreen of all ice and frost to ensure you can safely see out of the entire window, and aren’t “portholing”, a practice that could see you fined £60.
  3. Remember, in icy conditions tyre grip is greatly reduced, so braking distances are much longer. Leave a much increased gap to the vehicle in front.
  4. You should accelerate, brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to reduce skid risk, while a higher gear may be more appropriate to help find traction on pack ice.
  5. Black ice - a smooth, transparent layer of ice on the road surface - is another hazard on winter roads as it’s not easily visible to drivers, so be extra careful if the road looks ‘wet’ as it could be black ice.
