Coastguards have issued a plea to dog owners after a major rescue on the Cornish coast.

They are urging people to keep pets on leads, after one fell down the 80ft round hole at Trevone.

Coastguard teams from Padstow and Newquay managed to winch Issey to safety on Saturday morning.

Remarkably, they say the springer-doodle only suffered superficial injuries and was taken to be checked over by vets.

Richard Higman shared these photos of the rescue, saying he spotted a lot of pets off their leads.

"Padstow Coastguard have just rescued a dog from the bottom of Trevone Round Hole.

Issey was very lucky to have survived such a fall, she is the only dog I can remember having done that.

"She is off to the vet now for a check up, hopefully she will be OK.

"I was surprised at the number of dogs off leads up there this morning, in fact most of them were.

"Please keep your dogs on leads for their own safety".

"Team tasked by Falmouth Coastguard to recover a dog who had fallen down the Trevone Round Hole. Newquay Coastguard were also tasked to provide back up.

"Once on scene, the team located the dog’s owners and quickly ascertained that it had survived the fall and appeared to be moving around freely at the bottom of the hole.

"The team established a full clifftop rescue set up and deployed a cliff technician into the hole with an animal recovery bag.

"Having secured the dog, Issey, a Springer Doodle, safely in the recovery bag, the cliff technician was then recovered to the top of the cliff by the rest of the team.

"The cliff technician reunited Issey with her owners, provided relevant safety advice and supplied the details of a local vet so she could be checked over.

"Barring some superficial injuries, she appeared to be in a good state of health and we wish her a speedy recovery from her adventure.

"We would again urge those out walking our coastal paths with their four legged friends to always keep them on a lead.

"Within five minutes of recovering Issey, the team spotted another dog running free at the top of the round hole.

"Safety advice was given to this animal’s owners and we received the traditional response that they trust their dog.

"Several team members are dog owners and regularly walk their animals on the coast path.

"Though we trust our dogs, we don’t trust them enough to risk their lives and the happiness of our families for the sake of applying a lead".
